The seaside in Tuscany: Sterpaia Coastal Park in Piombino

Sterpaia Coastal Park is a wet forest, typical of the ancient coastal landscape of Maremma, an enchanted place located on the wide gulf between Piombino and Follonica.

It is an area of around 296 acres where you can get lost among oak trees, in the company of small animals that inhabit the forest, up to discover, over the sand dunes, the sea. Here you are located at Sterpaia Coastal Park, south of Piombino.

Some extensive dunes are home to stretches of the coastal pine forest, which remains comfortable during the hot summer days in the shade of the foliage of pines, lulled by the sound of cicadas. Those who love beaches, can have 17 hectares of sand, for a development of about 10 kilometers of coastline, with factories, restaurants and picnic areas. The beaches are situated in Perelli, Carlappiano, Mortelliccio, the Pine, Carboniferous and Torre Mozza. The roads leading to the entrances to the park and the beaches leave from the road so-called “geodesic” that connects to Riotorto Piombino.

If the coast of Follonica – Piombino I prefer the coastal areas to the north, where you can enjoy the pine forests and beaches of the Gulf of Baratti.

How Mexico City Proved Me Wrong

When I was four years old my family took a cruise to Cancun. Cue the cliches.

Jewelry hawkers tried to drape silver necklaces on my mother. They pushed overpriced woven blankets and fake Mayan replicas on my grandmother. I played with other sunburned American kids in the blue water. It stung my eyes so hard I cried.

For 25 years, Mexico was just a touristy party land to me. It was a place to go on spring break or after graduating college. Frankly, I didn’t take it seriously.

That changed in the late 2000s. Suddenly there was a growing number of beheadings, rapes and shootings in the tourist areas of Acapulco and the Yucatan. The media made Mexico out to be a bloody Disney World. I was intrigued.

In 2013, my fiance Greg and I visited Mexico City on a mission to discover the Mexico that didn’t involve beachside resorts or headless tourists. We rented an apartment in La Condesa, a neighborhood with a reputation for being authentic and safe.

It was just five nights, but that trip to Mexico City was a game changer. It opened us up. The world got a little bigger, and suddenly eating bugs and accepting brown water from a stranger didn’t seem like big deals.

First, let’s be upfront about something; we were scared.

The internet hype around “the dangers of Mexico” was intense. There were a handful of online comments about armed robberies on busses. A few people knew a friend-of-a-friend who had been mugged in broad daylight.

I had nightmares.

But within a few hours, it was clear Mexico City was full of totally normal people living totally normal lives.

Duh.

This place was not the scary land of drug dealers we’d read about online. Sure, we were extra vigilant and stuck to the most well-lit path. But overall we felt completely safe in La Condesa and the city center.

Mexico City was interesting. It was gritty and real and the food was amazing. We discovered an intriguing, and ridiculously high value, corner of the world.

Screw Mayan knockoffs in Cancun. Mexico’s Museum of Anthropology had authentic replicas from all of Mexico’s original cultures.

Grasshoppers

Then there was the bug eating.

The New York Times did a writeup about a downtown Mexico City restaurant that served toasted grasshoppers and orange slices. After downing some mezcal we practiced our sub-par Spanish on the waitress.

“Insectos?” I made a hopping motion with my hand across the table.

(Pro tip: the correct word for ordering grasshoppers is “chapulines.”)

When she brought them over we had to convince ourselves they were actually dead. The toasted corpses appeared to move in the wind. I won’t tell you grasshoppers taste good. They were somehow crunchy and squishy at the same time. But you know what; we tried them and lived to tell.

Try Something New

Inspired by eating my first bug, (and made bold by drinking more mezcal,) I kept the whole try-something-new thing going at dinner. When the waiter took our drink order, I pointed to a random cocktail on the menu.

He returned with a beer and a muddy glass of brownish red liquid and ice. What exactly was this “cubano” I had ordered? One sip and it was clear this would be my go-to drink for the remainder of the trip.

Once home, I immediately tried to replicate the cubano recipe. The closest I’ve come is a mix of hot sauce, Worcestershire, lime, salt and beer. (Cheap beer works best.)

Looking back, Mexico City was one my favorite destinations to date. Perhaps because I didn’t have any expectations. My eyes were completely open. There were no preconceptions, just what was in front of me.

And often that was a cubano.

Từ khi biết tin Cục nghệ thuật cấm em biểu diễn, em thật sự rất buồn và tuyệt vọng. Em mất hết niềm tin vào cuộc sống này. Em chẳng biết đời mình rồi sẽ trôi về đâu. Quả thật là em đang trong những ngày tuyệt vọng nhất của đời mình, em chỉ còn biết đi lang thang đâu đó mà thôi.

 

Đôi lúc "điên điên" không kiềm chế bản thân mình nên em mới làm những điều không đúng trên Facebook. Bây giờ thì em ân hận vì những gì đã qua. Nên chắc chắn em sẽ không bao giờ quay hay đăng tải những hình ảnh, đoạn clip sexy nữa đâu.

 

Có vẻ như bạn đang hối hận về những gì đã qua?

 

Vâng! Em rất buồn vì những gì đã qua. Chỉ vì những lúc “điên điên” nông nổi, muốn nổi loạn để rồi gây ra cơ sự này. Em ân hận nhiều lắm. Muốn quay ngược thời gian trở lại… nhưng không được rồi.
 

Không ai có thể hiểu được những mệt mỏi mà em đang trải qua. Giống như không có lối thoát và lạc mất phương hướng. Thời gian sắp tới em chẳng biết làm gì, chẳng biết phải đi đâu về đâu. Bởi quay lại trường học cũng chẳng được vì đã xin tạm dừng. Không còn mặt mũi nào để quay về nhà vì làm mất mặt ảnh hưởng đến gia đình, người thân. Rồi không ít bạn bè ruồng bỏ, xa lánh, đặc biệt là “ăn đá”, “ăn gạch” của dư luận suốt thời gian qua. Em thật sự thấy ân hận nhiều lắm.

 

"Ân hận" nhưng tại sao sau khi bị Sở VH TT - DL Hà Nội cũng như Khánh Hòa cấm biểu diễn, thì mới đây bạn vẫn biểu diễn ở một quán bar tại TP.HCM?

 

Dư luận có cái nhìn không tốt về em nên toàn “ném đá” em. Chứ thật ra đó là một bữa tiệc sinh nhật của bạn em. Không chỉ riêng em mà bạn em, nhiều người khác cũng cùng lên ca hát, nhưng chỉ duy nhất mình em “may mắn” được quay clip và đăng tải trên mạng mà thôi.

 

Không biết sau chuyện này, một “bà Tưng” nổi loạn với những hình ảnh, clip sexy, những phát ngôn gây sốc… có còn tồn tại?

Nhiều người nói rằng nhiều khả năng "bà Tưng" sẽ kiện Cục Nghệ thuật biểu diễn?

 

Em sẽ không kiện Cục Nghệ thuật biểu diễn như lời đồn đại của mọi người. Bởi em không rành về luật, vả lại em hiểu rằng họ làm đúng chức năng, công việc của họ.

 

Huyền Anh nói đang rất ân hận với những gì mình làm. Vậy bạn có oán giận người được cho là đã giật dây cho bạn làm những chuyện gây xôn xao dư luận vừa qua?

Em khẳng định là không có ai giật dây hay là đứng đằng sau em cả. Em tự đơn thân độc mã làm mọi thứ.

 

Dù sao cũng mong Huyền Anh sớm bình tâm trở lại và vượt qua khó khăn hiện tại!

Discover Underwater Treasure in Michigan

Michigan, it’s right in our own backyard. We grew up on the Great Lakes in Ontario, Canada, but rarely ever made it over to our neighbouring State. We’d pass through it driving to Florida, but we never stopped. After travelling the world for the past five years, we decided it was time to see what the State of Michigan had to offer. Our first stop was Alpena, located on Lake Huron. Visiting this town is actually a great way to spend the weekend and it starts at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.  

Great Lakes Heritage Trail

We were certified as divers on the Canadian side of Lake Huron way back in 2003. We dove a lot in Georgian Bay exploring the incredible ship wrecks of the area. Diving the Great Lakes was an amazing experience. The lakes were a giant shipping lanes in the 1800′s and 1900′s, but the waters were dangerous. A storm can spring up at any time and many ships paid the price. Shipwrecks clutter the bottom of the Great Lakes and because the water is fresh and cold, they remain in perfect condition. Now that the invasive zebra mussels removed all of the particles from the water, the lakes are also crystal clear. The mussels are causing a lot of problems to the ecosystem, but they sure make great conditions for divers in the Great Lakes. If you want to see shipwrecks, Lake Huron is the place to do it. Now I know what your thinking, “But Deb and Dave, I’m not a scuba diver!” 

Never Fear

If you are not a scuba diver, there is a way to see the ships for yourself in Alpena, Michigan and your tour starts at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. It’s quite a fascinating place to visit.  Our tour started with a power point slide show and talk. I normally have no interest in sitting in a theatre and listening to people speak, but our guides were fun, entertaining and informative. As marine archaeologists, they know what they’re talking about. So much that they’ve been featured on the Discovery Channel and National Geographic on several occasions.

The waters off the coast of Alpena are some of the worst on the Great Lakes. Many ships went down in these waters and with 116 Shipwreck in the area, it was declared a National Marine Sanctuary in 2000. It’s such an amazing underwater treasure that it’s attracted the likes of Jean-Michel Cousteau and the discoverer of the Titanic, Robert Ballard. A lot of work goes into identifying and finding these ships and the sanctuary is making sure that they all stay in tact for our future enjoyment.

The Museum

After our talk, we went in to the museum to explore the full scale replica Great Lakes Schooner in the centre of the exhibit. It’s so lifelike that they even simulate a storm on the sea. We are told that one person has thrown up on this exhibit, so they did their job well. It’s pretty fun walking through the ship and feeling what it might be like to be in the middle of a storm. Those men were brave (or crazy!)

Moving on, we crawled through a maze of tubes hanging over a ship wreck, this is the museum’s way of giving regular folks the chance to see what it’s like to actually dive over a shipwreck…note, this isn’t at all what it’s like to dive over a shipwreck but it’s fun crawling through the tubes. It feels like you’re in Happy Land at McDonalds.

Science on a Sphere

The most exciting exhibit in the museum is definitely the science on a sphere. I could watch this thing all day. Computers generate global weather patterns, ocean currents, and even simulate natural disasters like the 1994 Tsunami and Japan Earthquake.

We could have spent a lot more time in the museum, but we had a boat to catch. A glass bottom boat to be exact. Captain Dan greeted us and we took our seats in the lower deck. At first we were upset that the entire top deck was full but in the end it all worked out. If you are planning on going on a glass bottom boat tour, I recommend being on the bottom. Once you pass over the ships, you are at the best place to see it. We had prime seats around the railing to view the wrecks below.

Jeff was our spotter and he spent his time on the walkie talkie telling the captain where to maneuver over the wrecks. Each sunken ship has a story and divers, scientists and explorers have spent decades documenting and matching the pieces of wood below to ships from the past.

There’s Shamrock that was a sailing ship turned into a steamer before it finally sank. There’s the William P Rend that sank in 1902. It was salvaged and put back into commission in 1904, but it finally laid to rest at the bottom of Thunder Bay in 1917.  Yes, all these ships have a story and it was fun to explore from the comfort of the boat. If you don’t scuba dive and if you are not keen on snorkelling in 60 degree water, a glass bottom boat tour is the next best thing.

Vigilia di Ferragosto: In Viareggio the Carnival parade

Starting from 20:30 on Viali a Mare protagonists once again the giant papier-mâché along with costumed groups, will parade for the second time at night in this great summer event. There will be three first-class wagons that will go out of the hangar and will return to parade. The construction will start from the Citadel at 20.30 and will walk along the avenue Einaudi and then along the seafront.

At about 21.30 is scheduled to arrive in Piazza Puccini and then the parade will continue until Piazza Mazzini. The wagons will perform to their full potential with all the movements in operation, and they will be illuminated with masks and music. In addition, thanks to the collaboration with Boomart Festival, awaiting the arrival of the wagons, Piazza Mazzini becomes the terrace of the artists. In August the 14^th , the evening will be dedicated to the Beatles between music and live painting.

Also, there will be provided a third parade Saturday in August the 24^th , at Rainbow Summer, an event of the Tuscany Region, which aims to celebrate the Tuscan, its culture, its tourism, its excellence.
